Cissus quadrangularis is a herbal remedy that has long been known to treat pain, ligaments, and tendons. It also promotes bone growth after fractures or in arthritis. It is a tonic, remineralizing, antioxidant, and analgesic herbal medicine, with specific properties to heal bone fractures. In addition, its name in goun (kankpé or alinkpé) means connects ligaments, tendons, and hip bones. It also treats sterility in men, in addition, the leafy stem increases the weight of the testes and effectively improves the quality of semen. She treats menstruation problems in women. Description

It is a climbing plant of the Vitaceae family (to which the vine also belongs). They are of very diverse geographical origins, mostly from tropical regions. It is a liana that grows easily in the small forests of West and Central Africa. It is found in the south of many countries in West Africa. The sap is sticky like semen but very itchy and the vine should be handled with care.

Curative virtues

Cissus quadrangularis is used as a general tonic, analgesic, aphrodisiac, and to heal bone fractures. Studies have shown beneficial effects for the health of the extract of Cissus quadrangularis and in particular, it promotes the healing of bone injuries and relieves pain. Cissus quadrangularis extract contains natural plant steroids, ketosterones, which accelerate bone healing. They also neutralize the antianabolic effects of cortisone in the treatment of fractures. The plant has analgesic activity comparable to that of aspirin. It exerts a venotonic effect on human veins. These results confirm the traditional use of Cissus quadrangularis in the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with hemorrhoids. It has a strong antioxidant activity and neutralizes free radicals in various systems which may explain its effectiveness on damaged tissues. It inhibits lipid peroxidation and free radicals, and stimulates the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes; has a gastro-protective effect: traditional medicine uses it to treat gastric disorders, pain, hemorrhoids, etc. Cissus quadrangularis induces significant reductions in weight by reducing appetite, promoting the increase in muscle mass, and promoting the reduction of total cholesterol, thus improving cardiovascular risk factors. This plant has very beneficial effects on human health.

Direction of use

The roots are used in decoction, infusion, maceration or powder.

- Dose: Adult: a large ladle (about 100 ml) 3 times a day

- Side effects: slight abdominal pain - Antidote: drink the macerated powder of Cassia Sieberiana
