Arachis hypogeo(Peanut)

French :ground nut. Wolof : Guertté Goun : Azinn.

Description

Peanuts are known for their seeds which are eaten fresh, raw, roasted, cooked, sweetened, or salted, in porridge, in sauce, in soup, the leaves and empty pods are diuretics. It is not a nut it is a vegetable just like green beans, soybeans, lentils, or peas. The peanut originates from Brazil and was introduced by the Portuguese to Africa. The seeds develop underground in a pod that contains two or three seeds. When the stems and leaves turn yellow it is a sign that the fruits are ripe and picking can begin.

Properties and uses

Conservation
