DEFINITION

Worldwide and particularly in eastern Asia

Soybeans or soya beans are kinds of legumes. They are an important component of Asian diets and have been consumed for thousands of years. Today, they are mainly grown in Asia and South and North America.

In Asia, soybeans are often eaten whole, but heavily processed soy products are much more common in Western countries.

Various soy products are available, including soy flour, soy protein, tofu, soy milk, soy sauce, and soybean oil.

Soybeans contain antioxidants and phytonutrients that are linked to various health benefits. However, concerns have been raised about potential adverse effects.

This article tells you everything you need to know about soybeans.

SOYBEANS BENEFITS

Some research suggests that including soy in the diet could have several potential health benefits.

We cover these in more detail below.

Reduce the risk of heart disease.
Soy's protein and isoflavones lower LDL cholesterol and decrease blood clotting, which reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. In one study, people who drank a 'milk shake' containing 25g of soy protein for nine Soy contain health-enhancing isoflavones.
Isoflavones weeks experienced, on average, a 5% reduction in LDL cholesterol. And people with the highest LDL levels experienced an 11% drop. (For each 10% to 15% drop in the LDL level, the risk of a heart attack decreases 20% to 25%).

Protection against cancer.

Soy's soluble fiber protects the body from many digestive-related cancers, such as colon and rectal cancer. While its isoflavones may protect the body from many hormone-related cancers, like breast, endometrial (uterine), and prostate cancer. Isoflavones act against cancer cells in a way similar to many common cancer-treating drugs.

 Counter the effects of endometriosis.

The isoflavones in soy products may help to offset the action of the body's natural estrogen, which is often responsible for instigating the monthly pain, heavy bleeding, and other symptoms of endometriosis.

Protect against prostate problems.

Eating soy products may protect against enlargement of the male prostate gland. The size of the prostate gland tends to increase with age, causing various types of urinary difficulties, including frequent nighttime awakenings.

RISK FACTORS

Soy, it turned out, contains estrogen-like compounds called isoflavones. And some findings suggested that these compounds could promote the growth of some cancer cells, impair female fertility, and mess with thyroid function.

In a recent study around 548 women and 295 men who ate soy foods as part of a vegetarian diet, researchers found that women with higher soy intake had a higher chance of having elevated levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

A high TSH level may signify an underactive thyroid. Researchers did not find the same results in men.

The authors explain that soy is likely to be safe. However, consuming excessive amounts may create health risks in some people, such as those with undiagnosed hypothyroidism.
